Essential resource. An information pack for teachers and students on Creative Commons (CC) jointly created by The National Copyright Unit and Creative Commons Australia. The pack explains what CC is, how to find CC material and the best way to attribute CC material.
Flickr - The Commons
The key goals of The Commons on Flickr are to firstly show you hidden treasures in the world’s public photography archives, and secondly to show how your input and knowledge can help make these collections even richer. The collection draws on resources available from numerous international libraries and museums and organisations such as NASA and the Australian War Memorial. Free. Institutions who participate agree to a “no known copyright restrictions” on the content they share.

Search for images under a range of CC licenses. Read a clear and full explanation of the various licenses.
Photos for Class
This site provides safe, age appropriate images for educational use. No login required. All images are Creative Commons with citations provided. Linked to the Flickr CC site, Photos for Class simplifies the process of your students finding safe images quickly. While there, also take a look at Storyboard That for digital storytelling.
ScienceImage – CSIRO
Scienceimage is an image library specialising in science and nature images. It is presented by CSIRO, Australia’s major science research organisation. Take not of licence conditions.

Pics4Learning | Free photos for education
A copyright-friendly image library for teachers and students. The Pics4Learning collection consists of thousands of images that have been donated by students, teachers, and amateur photographers. Unlike many Internet sites, permission has been granted for teachers and students to use all of the images donated to the Pics4Learning collection
Compfight image search
An image search engine that searches Flickr for Creative Commons or other images as specified. Free. Excellent for students.
Photo Pin
With PhotoPin, finding photos for your blog and adding them is fast and easy. Select the Creative Commons search option. Search for any topic using the search box, preview the photo, and click "get photo" to download the photo as well as the proper attribution link. Uses the Flickr API but is not part of Flickr.

An image search service with more than 3,000,000,000 pictures. Thumbnail size only but great variety and quality. Free for education and non-commercial use.
WorldImages – California State University IMAGE Project
The internationally recognized WorldImages database provides access to the California State University IMAGE Project. It has just been selected by the Library of Congress for inclusion in its historic collection of Internet materials. It contains approximately 80,000 images, is global in coverage and includes all areas of visual imagery.
Trove – Australian images
The Trove website is focused on Australia and Australian – historical data. If you are researching in the fields of the social sciences, literature, local or family history, or need inspiration for your school assignment, then this is the tool for you. It includes genuine Australian photos, recordings, newspapers, historical records.

Old Book Illustrations: pictures scanned from old books
This site is dedicated to providing you with a wide range of illustrations scanned from old books. Most of these vintage pictures are originally wood engravings or woodcuts, fewer are etchings or metal engravings; visitors looking for nineteenth century or victorian clipart might just find it here. You are welcome to use our pictures in your school or educational projects, as well as in your artwork or in your scrapbook; you can also use them to make CD sleeves, banners or any part of a website. According to the copyright laws in many countries, all illustrations in our galleries belong to the public domain and as such, they are free to use for personal or commercial purpose.

Science Photo Library - Dennis Kunkel
This site is an excellent scource of scientific images from electron microscope view through to diagrams and video clips. Images are accompanied by captions that provide detailed information. While some Royalty Free images are available, a login to the site and payment is required. Excellent quality resource for scientific study.
Animation Factory
Includes free animated gifs, ppt templates etc. Great source of design ideas.
Google Images
Do a simple search then use the cog on the right hand side of the page to access Advanced Search, Usage Rights (towards the bottom). Limit to 'free to use and share' for Creative Commons resources. Students will find the results disappointing after an open image search, however, everything on the web is not simply free for the taking. Using this option will help students learn about image ownership and avoid the disappointment of having their work rejected by YouTube etc for copyright violation.
